From 11 April to 6 September 2026 at Granet XXe, Pénitents blancs chapel
In collaboration with

From 11 April to 6 September 2026, the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence, in collaboration with the Jean and Suzanne Planque Foundation, will present at Granet XXe, Pénitents Blancs chapel, Kosta Alex, Coup de chapeau, an exhibition dedicated to the Greek-American artist Kosta Alexopoulos (1925-2005), known as Kosta Alex.
This retrospective of some sixty works traces fifty years of creation, from the artist's arrival in Paris to his death in 2005, through sculptures, assemblages, cardboard reliefs, collages, drawings, films and archives.
Using humble materials gleaned here and there, he created a unique body of work, marked by humour and ingenuity.
A prolific and resolutely free sculptor, Kosta Alex kept his distance from all artistic movements, drawing inspiration from everyday life and poetry. A discreet artist, he remained in the shadow of the greats he frequented – an attitude he shared with Jean Planque. His close friendship with Planque prompted Kosta Alex to complete the Swiss collector's collection with a donation of around ten works. Upon his death, his family donated another large group of sculptures, drawings and relief cartoons to the Jean and Suzanne Planque Foundation.
Following the departure of the Planque collection to the Jenisch Museum in Vevey, Switzerland, in early 2026, this event marks the end of fifteen years of collaboration and intense dialogue between the Jean and Suzanne Planque Foundation and the Granet Museum, serving as a tribute to this exceptional artistic adventure and collection.
‘I respect and admire this artist, who is both a labourer and a sculptor: a labourer to make a living, a sculptor for pleasure and joy.’
Jean Planque, preface to the catalogue of the Kosta Alex exhibition at the Claude Bernard Gallery, Paris, 1964.
