MASTERWORKS FROM THE FRIEDER BURDA MUSEUM
A COLLECTION PRESENTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FRANCE
26 May - 30 September 2012
In the summer of 2012, the musée Granet, a cultural institution of the Communauté du Pays d’Aix, will be presenting part of the prestigious contemporary art collection of the Frieder Burda Museum in Baden-Baden, Germany. Featuring 53 masterworks, mainly large-scale paintings, and sculptures, this exhibition is an opportunity to see the Frieder Burda collection, renowned for its depth and diversity, for the first time in France.
Also for the first time in the history of the musée Granet, works by iconic German Expressionists including Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, August Macke and Max Beckmann, and American Abstract Expressionists such as Mark Rothko, William de Kooning and Jackson Pollock will be on show.
In addition to this series of painters, seven particularly moving works by Picasso from his last period will also be presented. The exhibition, like the collection, places a particular emphasis on German contemporary art and will feature a representative series of paintings by Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter.
This selection of major works is completed by paintings by Neo Rauch, and young German artists Tim Eitel, Anton Henning, Eberhard Havekost and Heribert C. Ottersbach, reflecting collector Frieder Burda’s undying passion for art.
On the second floor, documents, models and photos provide an insight into the Frieder Burda museum designed by the New York architect Richard Meier. This light-filled building has proven to be extremely popular since it opened in October 2004. It was awarded the New York Chapter Design Award by the American Institute of Architects in 2005.
