MASTERWORKS FROM THE SFMOMA AND THE FISHER COLLECTION
11 July - 18 October 2015
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art was the first modern and contemporary art museum on the West Coast of the United States. Following the recent donation of the Fisher family’s exceptional collection to the museum, it now has one of the world’s finest collections of American contemporary art.
Closed for expansion, SFMOMA will reopen in 2016. The museum is loaning out some of the best works from its permanent collection and the Fisher collection before they return permanently to the museum. This exhibition is therefore a unique opportunity to see these masterworks in Europe.
This extraordinary collection includes works by Andy Warhol, Sol LeWitt, Alexander Calder, Cy Twombly, Roy Lichtenstein, Chuck Close and many other artists.
By simultaneously presenting works by the greatest post-war American artists, this exhibition sets up a startling dialogue between multiple forms of expression and the French public. The works by these famous artists, which include Red Liz by Warhol and Tire by Lichtenstein, are of an extremely high quality.
The depth and range of the collection make American Icons. Masterworks from the SFMOMA and the Fisher Collection one of the greatest exhibitions of American art ever seen in Europe.
